Lisl Steinitz

1913 Prag - 1991 Rostock
Elisabeth / Lisl Steinitz, dancer, singer, cabaret artist, born September 9,1913 in Prague as the daughter of Saul and Bertha Steinitz, had private dance lessons with Gertrud Bodenwieser. 1922-26 she studied singing at the Music Academy in Vienna, 1933 she continued her voice lessons at the Neues Wiener Konservatorium. in Vienna. After performances with traveling theatre groups in czech spa's in 1938 she was engaged at by the Theater an der Wien, but almost immediately dismissed because of the annexation of Austria. She escaped to Prague, where she performed in small theatres and worked in a clothing factory. 1942 she was deported to concentration camp Terezín, where she participated in cabaret performances with the Hofer Cabaret of her husband Hans Hofer/ Schulhof (1907 Prag-1973 Rostock, actor, cabaret artist) and in the production of Fledermaus (The Bat). 1944 with most artist she was deported to concentration camp Auschwitz, where she was selected for forced labour in the arms industry, followed by deportation to concentration camp Mauthausen. After liberation she enrolled a training in stage lighting and worked in this profession in Prague, later on with her hiusband Hans Hofer in Rostock.
